Needless to say, yesterday was a day full of anxiety as coverage of the election was everywhere. Oh, how I needed to be able to watch some regular programming just to take my mind off of my fears– fears of an Obama led country.
Well, it’s not yet 6am and it looks final that Senator Obama will be our new president. I have to admit that I don’t particularly like the guy. I did when he first surfaced. But he lost me when he opted to not be very forthright on looking into his past. Why is it that Joe “Sam” the Plumber’s past and personal life can be opened up to public scrutiny, but not the senator’s? Why is it he still refuses to produce his birth certificate to even establish his eligibility for the office? Why won’t he allow anyone to see how he was in college, his beliefs, etc?
Frankly, so much has changed today. History has been made, but not merely because an African American is about to assume the highest office in the land. We have just established that privacy is not merely a privilege any longer. We have established that we the people no longer have a right to know the background and character of our elected leaders. And what’s worse… we the people don’t care about their background and character. Finances are much more important.
For the new president elect, I wish him the best. Reflecting on all the things that have been raised over the past year is moot. Debating his motives and sincerity is also moot. Time will now tell what kind of a man Mr. Obama really is. And my hope and prayer is that he’s a good man.
And as a side note, I am really disappointed in the Republican party again. I really don’t think McCain was the best candidate to put up. That’s not to say I don’t think he’s a good and honorable man. He just lacks the charisma to inspire people. But the recent tactic of throwing Sarah Palin under the bus and blaming her for his loss is utterly ridiculous. John McCain did not lose the White House on account of Sarah Palin. He lost it on his own behalf. I really don’t think it makes much sense to make her the scape goat, not with the age of Mr. McCain. He doesn’t have another election process in him– not even if he feels physically fit in another 3 years.
Anyway, I vividly recall how the election of Bill Clinton was supposed to mark the demise of our great country. You know what? We’re still here.
And as an ending note, I am sad for President Bush. I sincerely do not believe he deserves to go down in the history books as a terrible president, no matter how much I have disagreed with some of his actions over the past eight years.
And now… we wait and see.
