Hey, was just rereading your exposition.

I’d have to say that I come down on the side of believing that Sardis definately started out as “alive.” They grew into deadness, true, but the fact that Christ still considers them one of the seven lampstands is important. Elsewhere, He does not hesitate to refer to apostates as the synagogue of Satan, denying covenantal ownership of them. But He still claims Sardis.

Great, provacative question, as well, with “What are the things that remain, that are to be strengthened?”

My inclination is to say that since He tells them this at all, the implication is that there are some in Sardis who have “ears to hear” it. That is, the church’s deadness is not universal among its members. There are some (few) regenerate who can hear. There are a few isolated wheat plants in the field of tares.

His message to them is something like, “Hold on, tightly.”

I think this explains why Jesus allowed a “dead” church to survive for several more generations. He preserved it for the sake of the true elect who were perservering in the midst.

Remember Sodom? How many righteous did it require for God to be willing to spare them?

I do not discount the possibility that the church started alive. But there are only some alive there at the time of the writing and it could be construed the elders were unaware of those elect.

I think the key focus in this address is the lack of interest in doctrine. When we examine each of the 7 churches, there’s something to be noted. Here, it looks to be doctrine. With Laodicea it was indiffererence to the things of God. With Ephesis, they had their suspicion, which caused them to lack love for their brethren, their neighbors, their enemies and ultimately Christ.

Of course there are some positive things to be noted too. That’s why this book is so valuable in this generation.

    Thanks for the thoughtful comments.

    Mike,

Nice blog, good post. Mike hess recently brought this subject up on his blog. He asked the question of what it will take to get the cultural fundies (HAC crowd) to become historic fundies. My response, in short, is that our blogging will probably not bring about reform, except for a few maybe, but not for the movement. We seem to agree on this.

I’ll be back often. Take care!

    reglerjoe,

I’m glad you dropped by. I have certainly enjoyed your site. And with James gone, I think it’s important that we keep on going with pointing out error and with bringing admonishment.

But I believe we do these things as a duty to our calling, not to bring about reform. I don’t believe in such reformation at all. And it has little to do with a better than thou attitude. The response has to be individual in nature. I think we see this in the scriptures. And while even Ninevah repented on a mass scale, their hearts changed individually.

Again, I’m very glad you visited. I consider it an honor.

    Mike,

You said: “But I believe we do these things as a duty to our calling, not to bring about reform. I don’t believe in such reformation at all.”

I’m not sure I understand what you mean. Do you mean that we should stay the course whether or not we see reformation, or do you mean the effort to bring about reformation is a complete waste of time?

I mean that as nice as reformation sounds, we’re never called to reform a party or denomination, hence there are no promises to cling to.

God uses this one letter to address the specific issues of seven independent churches. Each stands or falls on its own merit and compliance with the word of God. Now, while the individual accounts are to be read to all the churches, the response are intensely personal.

So, in the end I believe the effort to bring about reformation is a waste of time.

Reformation may come. If it does, it’s doubtful it will come in the way we anticipate. And if it comes, in the good sense, it will be because God has decreed it and I’m pretty sure it will be sparked a few churches tossing out tradition and tossing out error.

Therefore, we should remain extremely focused on ensuring we’re rightly dividing God’s word, discipling our congregations, practicing church discipline and living in accord with the word of God as our standard and not the rules of men as such.
